Apache Sling

Can someone please tell me what Apache Sling does, in plain English.

I assume it allows for the creation of wiki-oriented web pages, layered on
top of a JCR?  Or am I way off here?

sling is a web framework on top of a jcr repository. the sling website
should give you a fairly good overview:
http://sling.apache.org/site/index.html.
