What is the latest official word on the corruption issue with recovery
and custom functions in FMPA 10?

I have heard that FMI is releasing a v3 update to address the issue in
the next few weeks, but what do we know and what can we do to avoid
self-destruction in the mean time?

Anybody have any helpful information that they can share?

Silence...

Interesting.

You do all know there is a serious bug in FMP 10 that can cause file
corruption, don't you? I have a client that got hit by it. FileMaker
knows about it and is planning on an update soon. I was not involved
in the conversations with FMI, though, and do not know the whole story.

I thought someone mentioned something here related to it recently. I
was just curious if there was any more information about it "in the
wild."

I hope I don't get shot down in flames here, and I know your knowledge
of FileMaker is much greater than mine, but my understanding was that
the error is in Recover.

I thought it was just reporting an error when there isn't one. Is it
actually causing the corruption it then reports on, in the original
file, rather than the recovered one? If so, then it's a very good
example of the reason why never to go forward with a recovered file in
any circumstances. (I speak as one who has been burned!)

FMDiff doesn't seem to think that there is an error in the original
file, with the ones I've tried it with.

Whether or not the error is real or imagined, this situation has
caused me to be a lot more disciplined with my development, and take
many more backups, sometimes several in one day. Every cloud has a
silver lining, as they say!

None of this means I'm not keen on FMI releasing a fix!

Still stands, but of course, it becomes a much more serious problem.

As I understand it, there is indeed an issue of corruption, not just
an erroneous report. We think it is the recover process that causes
it. Even on a file that was okay before. Even then the specific
details of the problem are so arcane that they may take a while to
appear.

And yes, it's serious. FMI is on it though (so I'm told) and will
likely have a real fix for it shortly.

Can't remember the last time I recovered a file... And it's even
longer since I did a recover without first making a backup copy of
the file (just in case)...

Is this such a big deal?

Given that the problem appears to be created by the recovery procedure
and that problem may take time to manifest itself, then yes, I think
it is a big deal.

I too cannot remember the last time I used Recover, but given that
Recover is a last resort which I may need to rely on - and that there
was an FMI webinar this past week on the File Maintenance and
Recovery: New Tools and Best Practices, extolling its capabilities,
then it's important a resolution to the problem is found sooner rather
than later.
