Are your records deleted by a script? Check if it is running under full privileges regardless of account privileges.

Backup Server Databases to external

We are having trouble setting our Filemaker Server (9.0)
to do automatic backups to an external hard drive.

It works fine to save to the drive the server is on,
but when we try to set up a second backup to an
external drive, the Server Admin refuses to
accept as valid any filepath we set up to the
external drive.

We have tried various methods of identifying the
correct filepath through filemaker and other
software, but none are accepted by the Server
admin as valid.

Any idea what we are doing wrong, or is it
not possible to use the Server backup function
to save to an external hard drive?

Thanks,

It is possible (Mac); I've just got it working for a client.

It seems that permissions are a common problem. The fmsadmin group must have
read access to the whole filepath as well as read/write access to the actual
folder.

Once I'd got that set up -- as specified in either the getting started guide
or the help guide -- everything worked fine.

Export Filepath Syntax Problem

I'm working with a small non-profit outfit. It has 5 Macs, all
running some flavor of Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).

Computer A is dedicated to hosting the database files. It's funning
FMPA 9.0.3. Computers B, C, D, and E are on the desks of the staff
members and run regular FMP 9.0.3.

On Computer A I ginned up a script (subsequently attached to a
button) that would export a tab-delimited text file to my desktop. It
worked fine. I then went to try it on Computer B, logged in as a
guest. It didn't work fine. I got an error message saying it couldn't
write the file to the disk. Possible reasons included "disk full",
"disk locked", and a couple of other false conditions.

I suspect it has something to do with the syntax I used in setting
the filepath for the exported file in the "Export File" script step.
The following statements worked OK on Computer A but not Computer B:
   file:../Desktop/Donors.tab
   file:../../Desktop/Donors.tab
This one worked on Computer A but put the output file in the FMP
application folder:
   file:Donors.tab

What I'm looking for is a generic syntax that will put the output
file onto the local Desktop of the current user. Any advice?

And, in general, is there anyplace I can read up on filepaths in more
detail than the FMP documentation provides? As a longtime Mac user, I
find the subject pretty opaque, tho I understand they're old hat in
the Windows world.

You're overlooking a newish function (came out in 8 I believe), Get
(DesktopPath)

"filemac:" & Get (DesktopPath) & "file name.ext"

It will work cross-platform with the addition of a test:

Let ( [
prfx = Case ( Abs ( Get (SystemPlatform)) = 1; "filemac:"; "filewin:" );
DT = Get (DesktopPath)
];

prfx & DT & "file name.ext"
)

Sorting Numbers

We are in the middle of our annual science fair at school and we have run up against a sorting problem. When I go to run ribbon labels that have the student's name and table number, the sort will not sort all of the table numbers correctly. The number are like a1, a2...a10, a11, a12. The sort will sort all the table number correct by letter, but the following numbers are not sorted numerically. Is a way to sort the numbers so the numbers following the letter are in numerical order.
Thanks,Bill Wallace

Re: Sorting Numbers
Create 2 calculated fields:

Table Letter = Left(TableNumber, 1) - That gets the letter part alone - it is a text calc

Table Number = Subsitute (TableNumber; Table Letter; "") and make that a number calc

Then sort by:

Table Letter
Table Number

I think that will do it.  IF table number will not express as a number you may have to add GetAsNumber function in there.

Yes, you need TWO fields, one alphabetic, one numeric. Make both sort.

Or instead of entering A1 enter A01, etc, for all single digit numbers

Just for fun. Define one field:

SerialSort - (Calculation, Number Result) =

Let([

a=theSerialAlphaField;
b=Position("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"; Left(a;1); 1; 1);
c=GetAsNumber("1" & Right("00" & b; 2) & Right("000000000" & Middle
(a; 2; 20); 9))
];
c)

This calculation assumes that the first character will always be a
single alpha character and the remaining of the serial number will be
digits not equaling or exceed 1000,000,000.

Hope this helps!!!

Ah, yep! I just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that "numbers"
inside of "text" do NOT sort numerically. Ergo the two fields, or
"padding-with-zeros" trick that Don so graciously described.

Assumption is that the "alpha" will always be ONE character and the "number"
will always be less than "1000,000,000". Ergo the two fields, in my
approach. Keep 'em separate and don't worry about it, sort by both, of
course. :D

Not to nit pick, but in ASCII, in any given position, a numeric will sort in
front of an alpha character.
The problem is in the positions.
If you can guarantee, for instance, a 3 character field, it is possible,
(and a quick fix in the stated situation) to insert a zero in front of a
single digit to make what is a 3 character text field: the whole field will
then sort correctly.

However, for any general design these should indeed be two separate fields,
handled as described in any of the preceeding messages.

Pedantic, huh?

Ron

Relation spoiled

I knew that the upgrade to fmp7 wasn't painless.

And, in fact, I am experiencing a lot of new things to learn and a whole new
set of techniquest to discover and apply to make the relation work.

I made some progress but I am stuck in what seems a trivial prolem.

I have a QUOTATIONS database with over 25.000 quotations, and I created a
table with over 6500 authors, with names and dates and bios. this one was
previously a separated file and now is a table inside the quotations file.

now... the quotation table has an AUTHOR_ID  and the BIOS table has an
AUTHOR ID.

In the BIOS layout I wanna see a portal where, for a given author, all his
quotations are listed.

But linking the two fields thru a relation doesn't work... and it's an
headache, since all other relations are running smoothly.

What am I missing.

Any help will be utmostly appreciated... and any time you need a
quotations... drop me a line

TIA

Right, because it then becomes "ASCII text", right? :)

I agree, but for sake of sanity, make your TEXT as TEXT and your NUMBERS as
NUMBERS and sort correctly they will (bad Yoda quote).
