Free Panorama viewer for iPhone

As many of you probably know, Apple is opening the App Store next week which allows
iPhone and iPod Touch owners to download all sorts of cool apps to run on their device.
As you also know, the web browser on the iPhone does not work with any Flash,  Java or
QTVR panorama viewers.

So, I've written "PangeaVR" for the iPhone.  PangeaVR will be FREE, and it uses OpenGL to
display a fullscreen VR pano.  It's really, really cool!  In addition to being a viewer, it is also
a VR Panorama database which gets updated every time the app is launched.  The app is
almost done, and I'm trying very hard to have it completed by Monday which is when the
app submission deadline is for the store opening.

You can read up on PangeaVR and see some screenshots here:

http://pangeasoft.net/pano/pangeavr/

This is a good opportunity for you to get some great exposure because I would like to give
you all the chance to have your "portfolios" listed in the app when it gets released.  You'll
get to write up whatever blurb you want to say about yourself, plus you can have a link to
take users directly to your web site.  Then, of course, you can display whatever panoramas
you would like the world to see.

The information on how to setup your portfolios so that PangeaVR can view them is here:

http://pangeasoft.net/pano/pangeavr/portfolios.html

Time is of the essence since I want to get this thing out on Monday if I can debug it in
time.  So, if you have any questions, feel free to email me directly at [hidden email]

Thanks!

-Brian

Hi Brian,

Very generous of you, in deed.

>  Then, of course, you can display whatever panoramas
> you would like the world to see.
>
Let me just mirror what I have read so far:
Once the portfolio.xml (url) is in your database, even with only one
pano for now, it will be automatically updated as long as the domain
stays the same.
Later, down the road one can add and or change the content?

Cheers, Milko

That's awesome.

Any chance you will be developing a version for Google's Android
platform at some point?

G'day Brian,

This is very exciting stuff. We've created 200 'iphone' panos along
with the xml file and have it all uploaded and ready to go. I sent you
an email with the details a short time ago.

A suggestion for future updates would be to include a thumbnail option
in the xml file & app, so users can quickly preview the panos before
downloading them.

Can't wait to see it in action :)

Thanks,

Great News Brian!

Currently I'm viewing my pano's on my iPhone with CubeWorld, a great viewer with lots of customisable options like autopanning, accelerometer movement, thumbnail preview etc. It uses cubefaces of max 1024x1024 pixels, nice and sharp. No online option though.

How does the Pangeaviewer compare to the CubeWorld viewer?

In order to clarify a lot of information I have updated the web page:

I think it will be much clearer now how this will work.

Brian...

Did I misunderstand?  Are OUR panos to be served from YOUR website?  Is that why the
viewer is free?

Please tell me I'm wrong, and that the Pangea home page is misleading!

Thanks
William

My understanding is that the XML files will be served from there, but
the URLs that you put within those will point to wherever you like -
in other words the equirect JPEG files held on your own server.

Thats l also my understanding !

My  "portfolio"  was set up yesterday, trying to put my most
impressive  panos together.

In this regard a question: Has somebody an idea how it would be
possible to check how many  jpgs were read from my webserver??  I have
at the moment no clue how  I could implement any webcounter there, as
there is no html file.

I'm kind of lost in the english text explaining how to prepare the XML  :-(
I'm gonna try to read it once again, to see if I get it better

Hi Willy,
> Thats l also my understanding !
>

I not sure, that is why i was trying to mirror Brian, but he is not
answering.

Not that i have an iphone yet ( Canada still doesnt sell an official
version yet), but  I understand it differently.

- I prepare the xml and keep it on my server in a dedicated directory.
- I can have as many as 200 <panorama> listed.
- I try it out with the viewer to confirm its working (can't because I
dont have the phone---emulator?) but its a simple structure.
- Once confirmed its working, I send the url of the xml to Brian
- He puts the url into his database, which is auto updated to the apps

Meaning all content is on my own server and Brians database only holds
url, name and descriptions.

I wanted to have that confirmed. Because if it is, all you have to do is
to prepare one xml with at least one pano....and build from there,
regardless the deadline.

Cheers, Milko

And if Brian's server goes down?

And if there are changes made to their system?

And if they decide to start advertising?

And if they decide to start charging us?

This is far to risky for us.

That is my understanding too, Milko !!

therefore  Brian checked already some of my panos in the "portfolio"
and when time permits, next days I will extend my XML file  with more
stunning panoramas  for the  coming iPhone world  out there....( I
dont have an iPhone nor an iPodtouch )

Yes, my point exactly.

We are depended on Pangea for production and distribution of our panos.

They tie us to them.

This is NOT "free" as we must pay allegience.

That may be fine for some, thanks Brian.

We will forgoe your kind offer.

Sorry for the confusion.  No, everything is hosted on *your* site.  You put the XML file and
the panoramas on your site.  The only thing that is on our site is the master list of sites.

So, when PangeaVR launches it downloads the list of known portfolios from our site.  Then
it gets the data for each portfolio from your individual sites.  That way you can update it
any time you want.  You can add or delete panos as you like and you don't need us to
know about it.

Now that's only if you want your stuff public.  If you want to keep it private then you do
the exact same thing, but don't tell us to add it to the master database. You can still
access your portfolio by entering the URL and then adding it to your bookmarks list.  That
way only you have access to it.

If we want the public to access it, though, the master list must be on your site?

Do you offer licenses to the player, for public use of the player, without referral to your
servers?

Correct, the master list is *always* on our site.  We maintain the list of links to all of your
portfolios (which are on your site) - that's the only way for the app to find them.  It's gotta
know where to look.  Otherwise, you have to enter the URL manually and then save it as a
bookmark.

I'm not sure what you mean by licenses.  It's going to be a free app on the iPhone App
Store, so you can download it to your iPhone/iPod touch and do whatever you want with it.
