That reminds me - I was lucky enough to have a vacation in Australia
last month (2.5 weeks! not bad for an American!) and ended up meeting
the folks at Blade Electric Vehicles in Melbourne.  Well, their shop is
up in Ballarat, but I met them at an expo in Melbourne.

Very nice folks converting Hyundai Getz to electric.  They just got
their conversion past the crash test - they even mailed me the video of
the crash testing - very cool stuff.  I'll try to find a place to post
it...probably on my blog somewhere.

They are selling cars, even in this hard economy.  Nice to see some
positive news on this front.

Details:  Hyundai Getz glider, AC24LS motor, DMOC445 controller, TS90
batteries (dunno how many tho), automatic transmission, air
conditioning.  It is the kind of car my sister-in-law could drive - no
need to be a car or battery geek.

Cheers!

Not exactly gliders.  They are given a discount (didn't say how much,
didn't ask either) on a brand-new ICE car, and then proceed to rip out
"perfectly good" ICEs and install perfectly good EV components.  :)  As
a means of customer cost-cutting, they allow the customer to bring in a
Hyundai Getz for conversion, thus allowing someone to buy a used glider
and have it converted.

I asked them what do they do with the ICEs, and he said that it is a
problem.  They're working on a few sidelines to use those in outback
scenarios, but nothing solid yet.

Cheers,

They should find someone in Nigeria to buy them.  Seriously!  When I
was over in Ireland, I was speaking to a guy who was picking up scrap
cars - specifically Nissans.  All the engines and transmissions he
could get he'd put in a shipping container and send them to Africa -
they make their own jeep bodies and put in the still-perfectly-good
Japanese engines.
