I've seen this in Safari but I have a pretty pedestrian broadband
download speed. There's a theory/urban myth over here that when
America wakes up then the internet slows down as zillions of you log
on to check your emails. If it is in fact true then with Michael
Jackson dying suddenly I'd bet that the internet slowed down as
zillions of people checked news web sites, emailed each other, etc.
See if it recurs next week when the news has quietened down.
