[OFF] Win server software

I have found an outlet for cheap surplus server-grade hardware and
thought I might like to set up a Windows Server to get comfortable
with FMS 10 on. I have it on a Mac, but wanted the Windows experience
as well.

What is a cheap (legal) way to get Window Server software (2003 or
2008, evidently) for limited use. I am not going to set up a server
farm, I just want something in the closet that I can develop on and
practice with.

Anybody who's climbed that hill willing to share some tips with me?

I also wanted to play with virtualization of the servers. I know
that's a big subject, but can anybody point to a good starting point
for a neophyte?

Thanks!!!

j.

Jonathan,

You might want to check into getting a Microsoft Action Pack
Subscription, which includes licenses specifically for developers to
test with like you want to do. It's a 300 dollar annual subscription
(cancel any time) but it's worth it for what you get. Here's what it
includes:

    * Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 (all supported languages)
    * Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 (all supported languages)
    * Windows 7 Professional (all supported languages)
    * Windows 7 Ultimate (all supported languages)
    * Windows Web Server 2008 R2 (all supported languages)
    * Window Small Business Server 2008 (Windows SBS) Refresh (all
supported languages)
    * Windows Server 2008 R2 (all supported languages)

It also includes, as you can see, microsoft's virtual PC, which may
get you started on the visualization front. If not, VMware is very
much recommended as well, and is used a lot in corporate environments.
You need to enroll as a partner on their website, that's free.
