Hi folks,

I want to burn some money on a new laptop.
All software here for WIN environment so no fancy Mac *sigh*

Should be really portable, which means below 2,5 kg. Better around 2 kg. Money is an issue as always, so please keep it below 1,000 eur.

if anybody is satisfied with the gear he recently bought I'd love to hear your experience.

Oh, sure. Of course I want it to use it for stitching and basic editing (no gigapixels on location), 3D capability would be nice but not a must.

Thx
Jürgen

Hi Juergen,

I am in the process of same research.

Lean to Lenovo X300 - it can be found here in Moscow for 900 euros, very lightweight an reasonably capable. Good (matte) screen with acceptable color reproduction.

My S10 Lenovo netbook is totally useless for stiching and basic editing, what I planned to use it for :( My old Asus F3Jc is tolerable in terms of productivity, but the screen is glossy shit and it weights 2.7 kilos...

Join to your request of recommendations!

BR,
Andrey

I'm no expert, but a friend of mine has an Apple notebook and runs Windows
on it. He says it is faster than any Windows notebook he has ever owned,
plus it gives him the option of either Mac or Windows environment. He
doesn't do graphics or VR stuff like we do, but maybe it's worth looking
into?

Hi,

I've got HP tx2130 tablet laptop.  I find it great for demoing my VR's.  I produced an object photo of it here - http://www.peterstephens.co.uk/object.php

Trying to find a link on the hp website but I can't get that part of the site to work ???  There is a new version of it out at the moment, has a slightly faster processor and more ram I think.

Cheers,

Pete

Take  new MacBookPro 13"  nice features  and a stunning design  ( no
sticker on and under it...)  and it runs Windooze natively, when
finally fed up with windows, you can  switch to Mac in  a minute.
Your PTgui license is valid also on Mac...

Price slightly above 1000 Euros

I personally like these one:

but I´m not really sure if they´re worth the extra money compared to this:

During the last 3 years I bought 8 notebooks for friends etc at their shop.
Extremly fast delivery and their "fun" option with 14 days pre-exchange is
realy worth 4 €.

Ciao

Hi Juergen,

A decent Windows laptop below 1000,- is an easy job to find. :-)
Currently, you'll get at least a 2Ghz Core2 and 4GB RAM for that money.
Take a common one off the shelf, just keep an eye on a sturdy case and a
fast harddisk. Don't care much about battery life as you will need the
full computing power for stitching, so a wall plug is obligatory...

The only real good advice i can give you, is, to spend some extra money
on an extended service contract. My Acer Laptop had a GPU problem (in 3D
mode the screen began flickering) after 3 years of use. I got the
machine back from service with a completely new mainboard at no cost.
For me, this was a 1000,- EUR bonus as it spared me buying a new
machine...  ;-)

Now! You guys that talked me into buying a Macbook: would you please direct me to a Mac software that allows me to controll my 5D to shoot 9-bracket HDRs? :D

Or do you run Windows just to run Breeze Software?

Thanks
Part time Macuser

Jürgen

Apparently Greg Ward's HDRCap was updated recently to use the newest
Canon SDK (and therefore control recent camera models).

Some cheap stuff can be found here, sometimes also Mac stuff:
http://www.discount-electronic.de

Last week I bought a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile U9200 (12" and DVD writer) for a friend, a sellout for 450 € on Ebay.de from the shop PC-OK-GMBH: http://bit.ly/IR3y3
