All,
Now that I've completed all the tutorials for AppFuse 2.x, I think we should release a new version (M3). While we haven't accomplished nearly as much as I'd like to, I believe we've solve some major issues with M2 that make 2.0 much more usable. Below is the JIRA Roadmap, where you can see what we've fixed and what remains: http://tinyurl.com/8ln5b If everyone agrees, I'll start on the release and upgrade guide this afternoon. M4 would likely be next week and its main feature would be AMP (AppGen in 2.0). How hard is it to upgrade a project I'm playing around with in M2 to

Hey folks!I just found some time to spend learning the 2.0 architecture and the way appfuse is doing it's business now. As I've never written any maven plugin before, this is quite new stuff for me, but browsing through what you achieved so far it looks very clearly designed and orderly to me so I would dare to offer my helping hands for the XFire integration in M4. This time I would propose not only to have a server part but a client part as well (maybe we can integrate some interesting webservice from the wild or we deploy a service ourselves that makes up something more sensible for the project) If there's something more pressing than the above, please feel free to point me at it. Since M2 only had documentation for Struts 2, is that the framework you're using? I've already upgraded a couple projects from M2 to M3 - it's usually just a matter of updating your pom.xml file (and possibly web.xml). I plan to create an M2 -> M3 Upgrade Guide as part of this release. It's sooooooo much easier to upgrade now, it's not even funny. ;-) Matt > > c > > On 01/02/07, Matt Raible <[hidden email]> wrote: > > All, > > > > Now that I've completed all the tutorials for AppFuse 2.x, I think we > > should release a new version (M3). Annotations should make it a lot simpler to integrate web services on existing classes. My initial thoughts for XFire are to web service-enable the UserManager. Following that, I'd like either 1) add to the services tutorial on how to web-enable a service interface or 2) create a new tutorial showing how to do it. Lastly, it'd be nice to make AMP-generated service classes web-service enabled by default. I like the idea of connecting to 3rd party web services and showing how to do that. Do you think it's best to do this in a tutorial, or integrate some service into AppFuse. Integration might be nice, but since users aren't getting the code like they did in 1.x, a tutorial might make more sense. Of course, you could check the code into the appfuse-demos project on Google code so we can test it between releases. Does that sound good? Single Sign On might be a good topic for the web service.

Mika... I like the idea as well.
I'd have to google, but I'll bet there's some web service out here that does the following: - Accepts as an argument a zip code and retrieves City and State information (This is an example you see used in AJAX resources, so users don't have to type City and State info, only the zip code. In this case, it may be a good idea to include that data with the AppFuse distribution so the user has an option to not have to go over the wire.) - Another would be using the zip code or City/State info a user has entered after they've created an account, and looking up something local, like a blurb about the current weather conditions or the top 3-5 news story in the closest newspaper to them. These are just thoughts though, and you should whatever you think will be useful. --Bryan On Thu, 2007-02-01 at 22:05 +0100, Mika Göckel wrote: > Hey folks! > > > I just found some time to spend learning the 2.0 architecture and the > way appfuse is doing it's business now. > > > As I've never written any maven plugin before, this is quite new stuff > for me, but browsing through what you achieved so far it looks very > clearly designed and orderly to me so I would dare to offer my helping > hands for the XFire integration in M4. > > > This time I would propose not only to have a server part but a client > part as well (maybe we can integrate some interesting webservice from > the wild or we deploy a service ourselves that makes up something more > sensible for the project) > > > If there's something more pressing than the above, please feel free to > point me at it. > > > Cheers, > Mika > > Am 01.02.2007 um 18:04 schrieb Matt Raible: > > > All, > > > > > > Now that I've completed all the tutorials for AppFuse 2.x, I think > > we > > should release a new version (M3). Those are great ideas Country Bry!
An Ajax call to a web service client that populates the city/state for the user. Sounds like a very useful example. Matt On 2/1/07, Bryan Noll <[hidden email]> wrote: > Mika... All,
It's dumping snow here in Denver, so Julie and I have decided to grab the kids and head for the slopes. If there's internet access at the Condo we're renting, I'll do a release later tonight. If not, it'll probably happen Sunday or Monday. http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=63983 :-D Have a good weekend! Mika - do you have any opinions on XFire vs. JAXWS? The reference implementation looks pretty good (and fast!):http://weblogs.java.net/blog/vivekp/archive/2007/02/jaxws_21_fcs_fa_1.html Matt On 2/1/07, Mika Göckel <[hidden email]> wrote:

Matt, currently I have no strong opinion. There are several options which could be evaluated: XFire apache-cxf-incubating Axis2 or JAXWS RI 2.1 I haven't done a comparison for over a year now, still working with XFire in my projects. What would be the criteria? The performance comparison you mention below is arguable as the Data-Binding for the Axis 2 reference is XmlBeans and JAXB for JAXWS RI. XmlBeans' strength is not performance but full xml schema capabilities and full access to all attributes of the xml message (even comments etc) -- there is a tradeoff to speed. Yesterday I dug a bit into the idea I posted a couple of days before, to see if the AppFuse "model" of setting up projects and artifacts could make up a good starting point for SOA architectures based on jbi, but I'm not really far into it. I try to get servicemix-3.0-incubating into a fresh appfuse generated project, but mess around with transitive dependencies and the problem that servicemix 3.0 is not available in any maven repository so far (I think this is apache policy to not allow incubating projects publish artifacts in maven repos??) The webservice framework world seems to partition itself like the Web MVC world has given as example.... ugly. Maybe we need to integrate them all and tell people the differences? No criteria really - I think it's most important to support the one we know best. Since you're the current "web services guru" on this project, we should probably stick with XFire.
That sounds about right. A lot of times Apache projects will host a Maven repo for their project though.
Sounds like a lot of work! I say we stick with XFire for now (and eventually move to CXF). If someone volunteers to integrate another ws framework, we can address that at that time. If we use standard annotations and such, hopefully it won't be too hard to switch. Matt
