However there is an issue with rocks as it needs hard drives for each node ($).

What we could do with is a Pelican/Rocks hybrid. Installable but sets up diskless nodes. Cheaper and easier to administer.

Ideas anyone?

How about mpich2 ,many fedora based systems are working on mpich2.
or taking some packages chaos Linux distribution .. (its only 6MB ) and incorporating into pelican.

There is a project in the works to make an installable distro that works similar to PelicanHPC. I expect that it will make an initial release in the next few months. Another alternative is Warewulf/Perceus (sp?). I don't have experience with it, but I think that it is used in some pretty big installations.
