Hi Listers,

A customer purchased an HP5590 Flatbed scanner for document scanning
using their Mac systems.

It's probably not up to the task, seemingly prone to jamming (using a
sheet feeder) and quite slow.

Anyone have any experience with scanners who might like to share
experiences/suggestions, I'm looking for 'robust' with reasonable speed.
I'm a novice in this area.

TIA.

I use the InsideScan plugin and an Epson 3590 scanner.  It takes some
additional script steps to auto scan and insert the image into a
field, but the documentation that comes with the plugin was clear and
easy.

I'm using InsideScan and I created both single scans and multi-scan
scripts, which work fine (though I am on the trail of what appears to
be a memory (Stack Overflow) problem.

My question is about equipment. The HP5990 is just not quick enough
and seems prone to jamming (it has a sheet feeder), so I'm looking for
a more robust scanner.

Hi John,

They may already have good equipment there going unnoticed.

One of my clients has a large Rico photocopy system.  It has the
scanning facility right in it and is very fast.  We had to get their
tech to come in and network it.  After that it was basically pick the
type of output format and go (Tiff, jpeg, pdf) .

We just have it scanning to a folder and they pick up the scans
manually, so I cannot comment on plug ins.  They are on a mac system
doing this.

Fijitsu S1500M.  We bought ours and its predecessor the S510M, from
ScanTastik.com.   Good machines.  Good vendor.

It is NOT Twain compatible, but the included software works great with
our FMP system

Hi John,
we (my organization and myself) are using Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M, and
I would say it works great. It has a small feeder, with 20-30 pages,
it is fast. Makes Tiff or PDF files. JPEG would be nice but it's not
an option. I comes with OCR software, which I haven't heavily tested
since I am using OmniPage Pro X OCR software.
Among the cons is that you can use a various sizes of document when
you do a scanning and it will make one multi-page PDF of all of them
(of course if you need them in one file). So letter size document,
post it note (without the glue on the back, of course), BCard, Index
card with note, all thrown together will make one PDF. Neat.

I have no association with Fujitsu, or anything with their sales of
these scanners. I am just a satisfied customer. Only drawback is the
costs, $400, so for home use it is rather expensive if you really not
into scanning all your bills and letters.

I build a small Applescript for moving whatever I scan into
FileMaker, using SystemEvents, Maybe there are some apps for that,
but this was free and it works fine for me.

Hi all,

I use three Ricoh 1330's, they works great. The user marks whether it is a
multi-page or single, I set the name and path based on that choice. After
the scan is complete my script posts the image back to the Business
Management System (FileMaker) and they can view it from there. The user just
has to paste when they are prompted for the file name. I have tried many
scanners prior to this, and have been using these for several years and it
works great.

Hope this helps,
Bonnie

I do all the above using scripting and InsideScan. InsideScan also has
the ability to paste, so all I do is click the 'scan' button (while in
the correct patient document), then choose single or MultiScan from
the dialogue and... it works, automatically pasting the resulting scan
(or scans) into the scan file associated with the patient.

My major concern is with speed, the HP 9550 is quite slow, five or six
pages per minute, practically speaking. I want about 40 ppm.
This is for a archiving records in a medical practitioners offices
with tens of thousands of files.

How fast is your Ricoh... ?

Thanks David,

InsideScan can scan and place the (single or multiple scan(s) to a
folder (in my case a) Scans folder on the desktop and then place the
scans in the appropriate patient scan file. It's a one button push,
with a choice of single or multi scan requirement via a dialogue box.
That's it.

Because the same folder is used to store the scanned files, I run an
AppleScript as a start of the scan process to delete the existing
scanned files in preparation for the forthcoming scan and their
placement into that folder.

It works very well... much to my surprise - as I'm not too hot with
AppleScript....

I am also much indebted to Marco Sandri at InsideScan for his
enthusiasm and help with the tricky multiple scans scripting, scan
type (jpg, png etc).

Hi John,

26 ppm full color
38 ppm monochrome

It fits our needs, but it sounds like you need something like RightFax. I
have another solution where we barcode the documents, scan, at which time
they are automatically linked. This solution was much more expensive than
the one that uses the Ricoh scanners. One of our goals was to give each
document a meaningful name, which is the reason for the paste step. I was
wanted to use only the twain plug-in.

Best,
Bonnie
