Unable to stitch pano of visually similar hemispheres

I'm attempting to stitch together the interior of an aircraft and running
into terrible stitching problems...

6 shots around, 1 up at +75°, nadir shot via benbo-rig (which works great -
excellent tip Pete!)

As I look at the images - taken from the center of the fuselage - the left
and right side of the fuselage are nearly identical/symmetrical.  When I
attempt to stitch in ptgui all I get is a severely warped loopy thing with
control points int 1200px ballpark!  I have shot the interior at two
different times, both with similar results - I'm surmising that it's due to
the symmetry of the pano...

I can stitch the forward facing or aft facing hemisphere of the fuselage
perfectly well - nadir included - the forward and aft bulkheads have the
most unique defining features in the scene... so I can stitch 3 around, with
1 up and 1 down - but if I throw in any 1 of the additional images the
stitch fails miserably.

I toyed around with the idea of placing small differently colored circular
stickers inside in various spots and shooting the pano - but that seemed
like a lot of editing, and would mess with the textures in the interior -
plus, there's the challenge of figuring out a way to make it happen!

Anybody encounter a problem like this before, or have a suggestion for
overcoming the problems?  How does one go about stitching together two
hemispheres?

TIA - Blake

Used to run into these quite often in office interiors (cubical's
usually!). Send low res comps (like 1000px width), lemme give it a whack!

Blake,

You may already have tried this, but what I would do is .... compare the
two opposite hemispheres in the control point editor. Are there any
non-overlapping areas where PTGui has generated control points? If so,
delete them and re-optimize.

Look at the control point table. If the worst control points are
hundreds of pixels out, then click on them to see the images they belong
to, and delete them if they are obviously misplaced.

If this fails, apply a template from a different project using the same
equipment.

Robert

1. If you have a successful previous project file using a similar
shooting configuaration, apply that as a template.  If not, initialize
the y,p,r parameters to their approximate known values in the Image
Parameters tab, making use of the Fill Yaw button after selecting the
yaw boxes of the horizontal images.

2. Display the Control points tab, and generate control points (from
the control point menu) for the horizontal images, displaying
successively 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 .... 5-0.

3. Optimize the horizontal images.

4. Add control points for the zenith and optimize that in too.

That's sure to work, provided control points can be found between
adjacent images.

should be ok then.

Have run into this myself, one of my early works may still be in the
PTGui test bed for this issue in stitching.

I experienced these problems several times.

my approach is as follows:

- set your Yaw between the shots manually in Image Parameters ( you
know the angle more or less)

- don't use the project assistant for placing the CPs

- set CP either  manually or " half automatically"  in the CP  TAB  /
Menu Control Points Generate CP for  a pair of pictures at a time.

that normally resolved the problem.

Thanks for everybody's response - Willy - this solution worked particularly
well... that half-automatic generation of control points was the ticket!
Thanks - Blake
