Our EV is very close to being completed, and before we drive it...

Who does insurance for EVs? Does anyone have any experience with
insuring a car worth much more than the blue book value? What
insurance companies are willing to insure a custom car?

Thank you,
Bill Ferguson

I bought a "stated value" insurance policy for my Karmann Ghia.  I think it was easier than if I tried to get a stated value policy for my '86 truck, though...  I stated how much I wanted to insure it for and got two appraisals for at least that amount.  Everyone suggested I carefully document what the car was, save receipts, take lots of pictures, etc.  Before they paid out on a claim, I'd have to do a bit more to prove what the car was worth (produce receipts, argue my case, etc).

Now that I think about it, I got it appraised before I started converting it.  It might have been harder to get the Hot Rod Appraiser types to ignore the fact it was electric, or even make an appraisal.

Good luck on insurance. I have been insured by State Farm for over 25 years
in North Carolina but the regional office in Virginia refused to insure my
electric truck for anymore than blue book value. So much for company
loyalty.

I was able to get a stated value RV insurance from some small company.

Not sure where you are, but my Farmer's Insurance agent was able to get me
coverage for stated value. They're not available in every state.

See website (below) on "stated value policy."

Thinking about converting a gen. 5 ('92-95) Honda Civic?  My $23 "CivicWithACord" DVD (57 mins.) shows ins and outs you'll encounter converting the sedan; the del Sol, or the hatchback. Each runs 144V/18 batteries.  Primary focus on component/instrumentation/ battery placement and other considerations.  For more info,   http://home.budget.net/~bbath/CivicWithACord.html

EVeryone seems to be talking about optional collision/theft/fire/etc
insurance here rather than state required liability coverage.  I've had
no trouble getting liability coverage on my EVs.  Considering that
about 50% of insurance premiums go to overhead and insurance company
profit, I elect to not have other coverage.  We now have a virtual fund
of around $60K of saved insurance premiums.

I have the state required liability through State Farm on my EV. If
one agent wont work with you, try another who will. Just because they
tell you the regional office wont do it, doesnt mean they actually
wont! There are a lot of games played between agents and offices. Some
agents are more willing to help their clients than others get through
the offices.

My father-in-law is a State Farm claims adjuster (not that it give me
any credibility). He told me to not worry about making an issue about
it being a converted EV when I get the policy. He also said if I
wanted a stated value policy it wouldnt be a problem, I'd just have to
talk to my agent. You dont have to prove it's value either, but you
have to pay premiums for what you say it's worth! Of course he
recommended an awesome agent to me who will bend over backwards for
his clients for policies and claims.

I had to search for a while but I now have mine insured as a "modified
vehicle" (with a stated value) through Progressive.  Some of their agents
are not aware that this is possible so you have to tell them to keep looking
in their system.  I also could have gone with Farmer's, but Progressive
turned out to be a bit cheaper for me for the same coverage.

I checked Progressive they had no issues with EV's. I just didn't want to
pay TWICE as much for the same@#$%^ 6 momth policy! as State Farm.

I have a declared value policy under Westfield National.  They accepted my
stated value without even requiring an appraisal.

I've been with this same company for almost 40 years.  I find that loyalty
matters to individual agents, but not usually to the underwriters.

Ditto.

State Farm had no problem with mandated minimums/liability.

My local agent couldn't/wouldn't give me a stated value policy, but did
verify that the "replacement cost" of my vehicle would be significantly
higher than KBB because of my receipts and EV documentation. So I can
recoup most of my materials cost in the even my car gets totaled.

YMMV. It pays to ask!
