Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

JA-SIG is proud to announce the release of uPortal 3.0.0 Release Candidate 2. This is the second release in the uPortal 3.0.0 line based on the core uPortal code base and the first 3.0.0 release candidate based on the core uPortal code base. Full release notes are available http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/UPC/3.0.0+RC2 along with a uPortal 3.0 release overview http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/UPC/3.0

This release includes the following new features and fixes:

  • A new theme and skin along with a more understandable directory structure for layout and skin related files. The new skin is also using jQuery to provide drag and drop features which are enabled by default. Thanks to Gary Thompson from Unicon and Jen Bourey from Yale for this work.
  • Layout cache friendly dynamic title support for channels and portlets. Dynamic titles for channels and portlets work on every render now. Thanks to Nick Bolton from Unicon for this work.
  • Quickstart generation scripts. Quickstart generation is now as simple as running an Ant task.
  • Consistent cache scheme and configuration based on Spring-Modules Caching API. Most existing dynamic caches have been converted to use the new API and it is currently backed by EHCache though other caching frameworks can easily be used.
  • CAS 3.2 is bundled with uPortal and is used as the default authentication mechanism. Thanks to Scott Battaglia from Rutgers, Andrew Petro from Unicon and Jen Bourey from Yale for this work.
  • CAS Proxy tickets are available to JSR-168 portlets as a user attribute. Thanks to Jen Bourey from Yale for this work.

Source and Quick Start downloads are available on the uPortal All Release page. The generated Maven site which includes JavaDocs and other interesting is available as well: http://developer.ja-sig.org/projects/uportal/3.0.0-RC2/

This Release Candidate is Feature Complete. At this point the only changes that will be made before a General Audience release are bug fixes. I would encourage everyone to try the release and please file bugs that you find in the JA-SIG Issue Tracker

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the development both directly and in-directly. Having this developer community available for both code and design insight has been invaluable.

uPortal 3.0.0 Release Engineer,
-Eric Dalquist

Hi,

Congratulations to everyone and I have a small question.

I know this is a feature complete release, but is it at least possible
to include the locale changer on the front unauthenticated page.

Also, I don't know this is worth to file an issue, but the Sign in link
in the quickstart leads to localhost, so one can not easily try this.
Isn't it possible to detect the used hostname from the request?

Perhaps instructions on just how to add the locale picker to the guest
layout would be sufficient? I don't believe this is something we've ever
provided in previous releases.

The sign in URLs are configured in web.xml and security.properties. We
will be including instructions in the manual on how to change these URLs
to specify a different host name. I don't think the CAS libraries we are
using can dynamically figure out the host name as they are more commonly
used when the CAS server is running on a different host.

Thanks for the feedback!

Why not file a JIRA issue, and we can look at putting it into a 3.0.1?
I suspect we should really be focusing over the next few weeks on
nailing testing & stability given the amount of new code involved.

Hmmm... possible, but I think a possible security concern (I know on
the CAS list Andrew has posted a number of times on this topic), and
there's always concerns about defaulting to an insecure scenario. I
think the most common scenario for the quickstart is downloading to a
desktop computer, though I could be mistaken. I assume you're looking
to deploy it out to a test server?

It might be nice to include some common options as ready-to-wear XML
documents that may be imported over the basic data set.

In this case, if there were a file called (for example)...

   properties/db/options/guest-with-locales.layout

You could "include the locale changer on the front unauthenticated page"
by running the following command (in uP3):

   ant crn-import -Ddir=properties/db/options
-Dpattern=guest-with-locales.layout

I have a quad-core server with 4GB and 15krpms sas where I run
development and testing. And I have a centrino 1.7 lapop with 512mb. Of
course it's better to do it on the server :)

Unfortunately it was not possible for me to find where to change the
Sign-in link.
I changed web.xml and security properties and still nothing.
I did a recursive grep and there were at least 20 locations where
localhost:8080 was mentioned and I changed every one that looked relevant.
I must be missing something and I don't know what.

The sign in link on the left hand side is set to the value of the "org.jasig.portal.channels.CLogin.CasLoginUrl" property specified in the security.properties file.

I'm going to go and document this in the manual tomorrow as I think this has been the biggest question so far.

The two places you need to make changes are:

In uportal-impl/src/main/resources/properties/security.properties
-If you want to keep using the embedded CAS server you need to update the logoutRedirect.root and org.jasig.portal.channels.CLogin.CasLoginUrl properties appropriately.
-If you want to use the uPortal login channel read the instructions in the "Local Only Authentication" block.

In /uPortal_trunk/uportal-war/src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/web.xml
-Change the value of the edu.yale.its.tp.cas.client.filter.proxyCallbackUrl init-param at line 94.

I hope that helps. I'll be adding a page about this to the uPortal 3 manual tomorrow.

If you have any suggestions on places we should document this or provide links to the documentation that is much appreciated. One of the hardest parts for us devs is figuring out where to put what information to make things the easiest for people.

Thanks for testing!
-Eric

In the quickstart there is no uPortal_trunk, i guess this is it?
./uPortal-3.0.0-RC2/uportal-war/src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/web.xml

As I said in my previous mail, I have changed these two files with no
result.
Do I need to do a rebuild?

I think for such information it's best to use the first level README file.
Also maybe the ant start could give info not just how to start from
localhost:8080, but also how to change it.

Yes sorry the directory is uPortal-3.0.0-RC2 and yes, after you make
changes to anything in uPortal-3.0.0-RC2 you need to run 'ant
deploy-war' to redeploy to tomcat.
